Song Writing 101

Our Song Writing class is programmed to be a combined independent study. Every student will be given one on one coaching as well as opportunities to work in a group setting. Each student will progress to the next level at their own pace (when they have completed the foundation challenges and end goal for each level.) Each level comes with new and exciting challenges for our students:

Song Writing Level 1 - Novice

As a level 1 songwriting novice, each student will learn the fundamentals of songwriting. Through daily exercises as well as group and individual “Foundation Challenges” students will discover with ease how simple yet satisfying writing your own song can be! By the end of the 4th class of this course, each student will have successfully written and performed their own song.

** Prerequisites - for this course include: understanding of key signatures, chords and a fundamental knowledge of the instrument of the students choosing. i.e you must be able to play well enough to perform your own song. (recommended for students middle school and up who have taken at least a year of music)  **

Song Writing Level 2 - Intermediate

In this intermediate course we will focus on writing multiple songs in many different formats. Level 2 students will learn helpful exercises to inspire their next song and how to combat writers block by starting and finishing one song per class. We will also touch on writing for different instruments well as different music genres. As in there was in level 1, level 2 will also have group and individual “Foundation Challenges” to help the student complete an original collection of songs as they continue to build their portfolio.

** Prerequisites - complete level 1 **

Song Writing Level 3 - Advanced

Advanced Song Writing level 3 will put students previously gained knowledge to the test as they compose a song and teach it to a group of musicians. Each student will compose one multi-intsrument 3-5min long song and get to watch it come to life as it is preformed live by a band of their peers.
