Summer Rock Band!



Put your skills to the test and join our Summer Rock Band! Each week is a different general theme including 80's , Punk, Country and Modern Rock. The emphasis of this ensemble is learning to play your part within the structure of a band. Students in this ensemble are expected to have the basics of their instruments down, but will be given the opportunity learn the basics of a group performance. This one week intensive is from 9am to 1pm with a performance on the final day! Choose which week works withing your schedule or join them all to learn all you can!

Week 1 -80's Week!

Week 2 - Country Week!

Week 3 - Punk Week!

Week 4 - Modern Rock Week!

Day 1

How to dial in tone to sound like your favorite musician

o   types of gear used (guitars, pedals, amps, drums, types of synths)

o   How to make your gear blend with a band

o   Mic technique

How your favorite songs work and why there awesome.

o   Common Song Structures

o   Scales, Chord Progressions, Lyrical Content, Melodies

Day Challenge

o   Take a song that you can already play and analyze the song structure 

o   Group chooses songs to perform and begins practicing 

Homework

o   Create a 4 Chord Progression / Beat / a 2 line Rhyming scheme for verse or lyric. Students Practice Cover Material

 

Day 2

How Stylistic Playing has affected other genres of music

o   Adding Elements from other Genres such as classical/blues/jazz into rock playing

o   How Songs are Created

Famous Song Writers and Characteristics of Writers

o   Story Telling in songs, Themes, Rhyming Patterns of Famous Pieces

Day Challenge

o   Students Break into small groups to put together a chord progression and come up with a verse / Chorus Idea

o   Group Meets and performs ideas to group

o   Group Practice of Cover material

Homework

o   Create a verse or chorus for your group song / Practice new Cover Material

  

Day 3

The Art of the Riff

o   Students analyze Famous Riffs, Fills, melodic runs that define genera, and how this affects the music

Groups Meet to discuss lyrics written and to assemble lyrics, melody, and chords, with help from instructor.

Groups Meet and Perform Pieces for each other 

Day Challenge

o   Student group swap songs and write 2nd Verse to song

o   Group Meets to Perform Songs and to offer Constructive criticism on how song can be improved

o   Group Practices Cover Material

Homework

o   Students Create a Bridge/ additional verse for song. Continue to Practice Cover Material

 

Day 4

How to Look Good on Stage

o   Famous Stage moves of innovators and how to use there stage presence in your own playing

Stage Communication

o   How to communicate with the band non-verbally

o   How to Fill Time between songs / How to connect songs and keep crowd entertained

Day Challenge

o   Students Work to put songs together completely and rehearse as a group

o   Students Perform Cover Piece

o   Students have time to work individually or in a group to tighten specific sections of cover songs or originals

Homework

o   Students Continue to practice in preparation of performance

 

Day 5

Performance Preparation

o   Students Rehearse Cover Pieces and Original Pieces

o   Students have opportunity to Practice specific sections of Pieces

The Big Show!

o   Students Perform for Friends and Family

o   Post Show Pizza Party


Requirements: Students should be able handle most of the following criteria: - Keep a steady beat - Can read basic chord charts (string), Can read basic drum notation (drums), Understand basic key signatures (Band & Orchestra) - Can play or sing basic melodies as well as understand basic syncopation - Student must be able to adapt to different styles of music - Students must have a basic understanding of the mechanics of their instrument.
Instructor: Anthony Edley
Instructor Bio: Anthony Edley is a graduate of the University of Hartford/Hartt School of Music with Bachelors in Music. At 23 years old Anthony has already played many major venues such as The Webster Theater Main stage, Toby Keith’s I love This Bar and Grill, The Hard Rock Café, as well sung overseas with The Hartt School Tour Choir as a featured soloist in both Austria and Hungary. While a member of the Real Ambassadors Jazz Choir he has shared the stage with Jazz legend Dave Brubeck at the Library of Congress, been a featured performer at the Monterey Jazz Festival, and has placed first at Berklees’ High School jazz festival. Anthony tours throughout the east coast regularly playing to packed houses and has opened for national acts such as Krystal Keith as well as Toby Keith. Anthony has written and recorded songs that are still played on 104.9 WIHS with “The Crystal Lake Praise Team”. Anthony teaches Voice, Guitar, and Bass in a variety of styles including Classical, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Metal, Musical Theater and Country.
